Light Roast

Light roast coffee beans are roasted for a shorter time compared to darker roasts. This level of roasting brings out a higher acidity and retains the original flavours of the coffee bean, which can range from fruity to floral notes. The beans have a light brown color, no oil on the surface, and a toasted grain taste with pronounced sharp flavours. Due to the minimal roasting, light roasts preserve most of the caffeine content of the coffee bean.

Medium Roast

Medium roast coffee is often referred to as the American roast because it is quite popular in the United States. It is roasted longer than light roast, which reduces the acidity and enhances the body of the coffee. The flavour is more balanced with both acidity and sweetness better integrated. The beans turn a medium brown color and may have a slight oily sheen.

Medium-Dark Roast

As the name suggests, medium-dark roasts have a richer, darker color than medium roasts. They have some oil on the surface and offer a bolder, more robust flavour. The roasting process starts to dominate the flavour profile, adding bittersweet aftertastes that enhance the coffee’s richness. This roast level is perfect for those who appreciate a spicy and fuller body in their coffee.

Dark Roast

Dark roast coffee beans are roasted until they exude oil and have a shiny black appearance. The flavours are mostly those of the roasting process—smoky and bitter, with much of the bean’s original characteristics overshadowed by the flavours of the roast itself. While dark roast coffee has the least amount of caffeine among the roast levels, it offers a bold taste and a heavy body that can stand up well to cream and sugar.

This attention to detail typically involves lighter to medium roasting profiles which preserve intricate flavour nuances and delicate floral or fruity notes​​.

Commodity coffees and those from larger brands, on the other hand, tend to be roasted darker. This approach is often used to achieve a more consistent flavour profile that appeals broadly to consumers and masks imperfections in the beans. Darker roasts generally produce stronger, bolder flavours with reduced acidity, which are often preferred for mass-market coffees​​.
